UN sounds alarm over the environment
07.06.2012 09:07 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Sustainability targets can only be met through rapid scaling-up of successful policies, according to a report published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on Wednesday.
The Global Environment Outlook known as GEO 5 reviews the state, trends and outlook of the global environment.
The reports finds that urbanization, consumption and population growth are set to inflict irreversible damage on the planet, which is why governments need to recommit to sustainability efforts.
Jan Dusk, Deputy Director of UNEPs Regional Office for Europe, says:
«According to GEO 5 the world continues to speed down an unsustainable route despite over 500 internationally agreed goals and objectives to support the sustainable management of the environment and improve human wellbeing. GEO5 accessed 90 of the most important environment goals and objectives and found that significant progress has only been made in four of them.»
Those include the removal of lead from fuel, the improvement of water supplies as well as the reduction of marine and ozone pollution.
