Melnyk thinks it necessary to improve wheat standard

Yuriy Melnyk, Minister of Agrarian Policy, declared within direct phone line conference he considers it necessary to introduce changes to currently effective State Wheat Standard DSTU 3768 (approved in 2004) in order to bring it into line with international wheat standards. «It is necessary to change Ukrainian wheat standard. But changes mustn’t be just situational,» stated Melnyk. As to him, wheat standard alteration will assure Ukrainian grain high sale prices on world market. Besides, Melnyk emphasized it is desirable to change Ukrainian grains cultivation technologies in order to reduce corn-bugs damage. As to Agro Perspective earlier report, Ukrainian Main Standardization Administration had declared it could introduce all necessary changes to Wheat State DSTU 3768 Standard (approved in 2004) on condition if power bodies put forward corresponding demand. This year Ukrainian crop wheat is characterized with corn-bugs damage high percentage. As to market operators, damaged are 19% total country wheat (depending on regions). As to Ministry of Agrarian Policy official data, within early Aug corn-bugs damaged wheat has been found on 6 regions elevators. As of now, damaged wheat shares over 2% total wheat stored on Ukrainian elevators. Ukrainian State Plant Quarantine Inspection is convinced 2006 crop grain is qualitative enough and therefore can be exported without problems.
