Copenhagen C40 Summit highlights role of cities within climate crisis fight

As of this week, the C40 World Mayor’s Summit is held within Copenhagen (Denmark), UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, the Summit is a unique forum for member cities to present the innovative actions they have taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve climate resilience; influence decision makers - from fellow mayors to CEOs and national leaders - to take the bold and urgent action needed to keep global temperature rise to below 1.5 °C; and inspire participants and citizens to take climate action in their own lives.
It is to be noted, C40 is an international organization that provides dialogue and productive work for more than 450 cities in the world in the field of environmental protection and strengthening sustainable urban development.
As to the report, while speaking within the Summit, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the role of cities within the climate crisis.
«Cities are responsible for more than 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions, so cities are critical, and they are largely where the battle will be won or lost,» he said.
They are also at the front lines of climate change consequences, especially costal cities, he added. As to the report, the UN Chief also underscored that four milliard people live within urban areas today, and the population of city-dwellers is expected to grow by another 2.5 milliard by 2050.
As to Guterres, the C40 Summit «is an important step on the journey for progress-to share best practicies».
«A greener future has started, it’s gaining momentum…but we still have a long way to go. We are not yet there,» he stressed.
It is to be admitted, within last decade, C40 has convened six Mayors Summits, hosted by London (2005), New York (2007), Seoul (2009), Sao Paulo (2011), Johannesburg (2014) and Mexico City (2016). Each C40 Mayors Summit has provided unique opportunities for the mayors of the world’s great cities to showcase their climate leadership on the global stage.
It is to be admitted, this year the C40 World Mayors Summit is held within Oct 10–11 (side events - Oct 9–12).
