Keep spotlight on internally displaced people, the world "invisible majority" says
23.09.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Aid officials, human rights experts and other concerned members of the international community have urged governments and the public worldwide to unite to support people who have been displaced within their own countries due to conflict or other catastrophes, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, in an open letter to UN Member States, they asked that «the spotlight of our compassion» be kept on this «invisible majority.»
As to the letter, as of now, internally displaced people (IDPs) comprise nearly 41 million of the 65.3 million people worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes.
«Internal displacement often marks the beginning of a long struggle at the bottom or in the margins of society,» the letter says.
Tackling the issue will require stepped-up efforts to meet the immediate protection and assistance needs of this population, it admits.
Action will also be required to address long-term political and development challenges that result from being internally displaced, the letter continues.
