Poroshenko: Economic strategy must be fair and clear for people
24.07.2015 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, the National Reform Council chaired by the Ukrainian President considered the Ukrainian economic strategy development, President Petro Poroshenko Press Office reports.
«Our economic strategy must be clear for each and every person and all the people,» Poroshenko said.
«When developing our economic strategy, we have to be honest with people, we have to recognize what we can do, say it clearly and be as good as our word. We also have to recognize what we are unable to do and say it honestly,» the President admitted.
As to the President, two previous attempts to deliver structural reforms in Ukraine have failed due to the following three factors: lack of political will and political majority to make a difference; strong resistance from pressure groups defending their entrenched interests; and the populism.
As to the report, the President criticized the Foreign Currency Loan Restructuring Law recently adopted by the Parliament emphasizing that it was a populist gesture of the MPs.
As to the President, the task is to find the most efficient economic scheme but not the easiest one.
The President also stressed the time factor, «we should not just put on pace, we have to run.»
«Global experience proves that countries giving their citizens more economic freedom achieve higher incomes and deliver better living standards,» Poroshenko said.
While speaking about the steps to be taken in short time, the President supported the «deregulation guillotine» idea (though he admitted the process was going on rather slow) and cooperation with the international arbitration community for the settlement of investment disputes at least to restore the order in the Ukrainian judicial system.
