As of now, efforts are made to urge the United Nations to declare an international year of plant health, to highlight its importance for food security, UN Radio says referring to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report.
It is to be admitted, within this week the FAO is hosting the annual meeting of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) at its headquarters in Rome.
On the meeting, FAO representatives tell how pests and diseases can have disastrous consequences on agricultural production.
The CPM, among other things, reviews and establishes international standards on measures which stipulate how agricultural products should be handled during trade.
