UNICEF: One in five adolescents worldwide is not at school
20.01.2015 09:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Around 63 million adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 years worldwide are denied their right to the education, UN Radio says referring to a new joint report from the UN educational agency (UNESCO) and the UN Childrens Fund (UNICEF).
The report released on Monday shows that globally, one in five adolescents is not at school compared to almost 1 in 10 primary school-age children.
It also shows that as children get older, the risk that they will never start school or will drop out increases.
The UN agencies estimate that in total 121 million children and adolescents have either never started school or dropped out despite the international communitys promise to achieve universal education by 2015.
Data reportedly show that there has been almost no progress in reducing this number since 2007.
