On Monday, October 20, Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatseniuk met with Vice-President of the European Commission Günter Oettinger, who had arrived to Kyiv in the framework of the preparation for tomorrows trilateral talks with Russia (which will take place in Brussels), Government Portal reports.
As to the report, following the meeting both parties had agreed on a joint position on ensuring the interests of Ukrainian and European consumers of natural gas from the Russian Federation.
The parties have agreed that the talks should result in an interim agreement for the winter, which will ensure gas supplies to Ukraine as well as the stability of gas transit to the EU countries. This agreement should embody clear guarantees regarding the supply of agreed volumes of gas to Ukraine as well as guarantees of payment for delivered gas.
Reportedly, the joint position of Ukraine and the European Commission stipulates the need for consolidating the agreements with Russia in the form of a document that is to be signed between Naftogaz Ukrainy and Gazprom. This document is to be be binding on all parties and exclude the possibility of unilateral changes.
