UN: “Bold and innovative" action needed to curb loss of biodiversity
07.10.2014 09:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Bold and innovative action is urgently required if governments are to meet a 10-year global plan to curb the loss of biodiversity, or various forms of life on Earth.
That’s the message delivered on Monday at opening of the 12th Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UN Radio reports.
The Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 20112020 and its «20 Aichi targets» were agreed by the international community in 2010 in Nagoya, Japan.
It is to be admitted, the package of decisions which are to be agreed is known as the «Pyeongchang roadmap 2020» named after the host city.
«Some targets are clearly are not clearly making enough progress for example, target 10 which is to enhance protection and reduce the threats to marine ecosystems which are particularly vulnerable to climate change for example coral reefs. Also for example target 3 on review of economic instruments so as to remove those instruments and subsidies that have perverse impact on ecosystems and biodiversity,» Mr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, the CBD Executive Secretary, said.
However, he added, significant advances had been made under «Aichi Target 11» which calls for expanding the coverage of protected areas, both land and marine, from 13 per cent to 17 per cent.
Meeting the «Aichi targets» would contribute to the broader global priorities addressed by the UN’s post-2015 development goals such as reducing poverty and hunger as well as ensuring a sustainable supply of energy, food and clean water.
It is to be admitted, earlier the General Assembly had declared the period 20112020 as United Nations Decade on Biodiversity.
