FAO: Ministers discuss issues facing global agriculture markets
07.10.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Governments need to review the way international agricultural commodity markets are governed, UN Radio reports quoting the Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization FAO as saying on Monday.
José Graziano da Silva told agricultural ministers from around the world that while prices are currently declining, the underlying problems which led to volatile fluctuations in the past five years persist.
More than a milliard people are employed globally in the agriculture sector accounting for a fifth of the worlds economic activity.
Mr. da Silva said it is important to reassess the sector.
«We need a forum like this, a neutral forum, where we can present our opinions, where we can share our concerns,» Mr. da Silva admitted.
The meeting in Rome (Italy) will look at how changing global priorities will affect the future governance of the international commodity economy.
