Pyatnytsky: Ukraine's plans to revise part of WTO liabilities legal
14.12.2012 14:32 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ukraines plans to revise a part of its liabilities to the World Trade Organization under Article 28 of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade is absolutely legal and cannot be an obstacle for the political association and economic integration with the European Union, according to Valeriy Pyatnytsky, the Ukrainian governments envoy for European integration.
«Ukraine has presented a list of 371 tariff items for revision by the WTO. The dialog on Article 28 will continue. There are no grounds for panic. A normal working process is underway,» Pyatnytsky told reporters on Friday, commenting on the European Commissions request not to revise the tariffs, NRCU reports.
Pyatnytsky said that in its conclusions the European Union expressed hope that Ukraine would not take the protective measures and revise the import tariffs, even though the EU does not require that in a mandatory manner. He said that the WTO General Council met on Tuesday in Geneva, where the EU repeated its request, but Ukraine continued its way and is now receiving applications for holding bilateral talks and consultations. Pyatnytsky said that there would be around 30 applications, including from the European Union, the United States, China, Turkey, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Australia, Norway, and Mexico.
