Ukrainian fields must be sown with domestic seeds
13.07.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Prime Minister Mykola Azarov is proposing to develop incentives for agriculture to purchase seeds selected in Ukraine. He expressed this opinion during a visit to the Exhibition and Innovation Center of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, on Thursday, referring to Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food Mykola Prysiazhniuk after familiarizing himself with the Ukrainian grain seeds.
The prime minister also added that what he saw would be considered when adjusting the agricultural policy, which is now being implemented. «We want that work on the cultivation of weather-resistant crops, that major selection work already started to give good results, be widely distributed, so that we dont import seeds, but provide our fields with these effective varieties,» Azarov added. He also noted that for two years the government and relevant ministries have paid serious attention to the development of national agro-technology centers, which grow seeds that can withstand drought and lack of moisture. The Exhibition and Innovation Center of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine was founded in 2009 based on the state-run enterprise «Pilot Farm Salyvonkivske» of the Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet (Vasylkiv district, Kyiv region). The Center occupies 76 hectares. Its fields offer more than 800 varieties of almost 60 types of agricultural crops that are grown in Ukraine using modern technology, ensuring the full realization of the genetic potential of crops. Scientific institutions of the Academy complete 500800 scientific researches a year, register up to 250 patents and other documents of title for inventions, conclude 350400 license agreements for using intellectual property objects. Agricultural enterprises of the scientific institutions produce annually 100,000 tons of elite seeds of new varieties of cereals, 30,000 tons of seeds the parent forms, maize hybrids, sugar beet and other crops, and provide about 90% of the needs of the state for elite seeds.
