UNICEF calls for inclusion of nutrition in development
04.04.2012 09:16 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The UN Childrens Fund (UNICEF) has appealed for the inclusion of nutrition security as an essential element of every development plan.
UNICEF says providing nutrition to children is as critical as clean water and as indispensable as education to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by the target date of 2015.
The goals set by the world leaders meeting in New York in the year 2000 included the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger by 2015.
UNICEF says that nutrition for children is a cornerstone for achieving that goal by the target date.
The head of UNICEF, Antony Lake who attended a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Uganda on Monday, said nearly 20 million children around the world under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition.
Globally, he added, 170 to 180 million children are stunted.
He called this a silent emergency that has received far too little attention.
