Malnutrition continues to threaten millions of children in Sahel
04.04.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
At least one million children continue to face the threat of severe acute malnutrition in the Sahel region of Africa, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
UNICEF is pushing to raise awareness about the nutrition crisis in the semi-dry region which stretches from the Atlantic Ocean through northern Senegal eastward to Sudan.
UNICEF spokesperson Marixie Mercado told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday that raising awareness about this crisis includes the use of Twitter by Goodwill Ambassadors Shakira and Mia Farrow.
«Our national committees across North America, Europe and elsewhere are also similarly making a push in their respective countries to put Sahel on the lips of everybody. Just to remind you of some of the numbers: 15 million people directly affected by the crisis in the Sahel, at least one million children at risk of severe acute malnutrition. That’s the best case scenario, 1. 5 million children is a worst case scenario,» said Mercado.
As part of the efforts to put the spotlight on the threat of malnutrition in the Sahel, UNICEF’s Executive Director Anthony Lake visited Chad on Tuesday while his deputy went to Niger.
