Bhutan advocates happiness as measure of economic growth
03.04.2012 09:23 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The measurement of economic growth should not be limited to national income but should include happiness of a countrys people, according to the Prime Minister of Bhutan.
Speaking at a high-level event at UN headquarters on Monday, Prime Minister Jigmi Thinley said economic growth should be holistic.
He said it should strengthen communities, protect the environment, provide universal health services and education, as well as preserve traditional culture and heritage.
Prime Minister Thinley criticized what he describes as «irresponsible, immoral and self-destructive» wasteful exploitation of natural resources without thinking about future generations.
«Having far outlived its usefulness, our fundamentally flawed economic arrangement has itself become the cause of all problems. Within its framework, there lies no solution to the economic, ecological, social and security crises that plague the world today and threaten to consume humanity. Mankind is like a meteor, blazing toward self immolation along with all other life forms.»
At the initiative of Bhutan, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled «Happiness: towards a holistic approach to development» in July 2011.
