UN: Aid must be effective and accountable in times of financial austerity
30.11.2011 08:21 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Aid must reach those most in need, and it should be flexible and country-driven.
That’s what the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to tell delegates at a meeting on aid effectiveness on Wednesday.
Ministers from developing and donor countries, civil society and private sector organizations are in Busan, in South Korea, to review how money is being spent on development aid.
They are also expected to make new commitments to ensure aid reduces poverty and supports progress in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Aid effectiveness is about ensuring maximum impact of development aid to improving lives, cutting poverty and helping achieve the MDGs.
Mr. Ban told reporters on Tuesday that the forum comes at an important time, and that aid effectiveness and solidarity are vital in this age of financial austerity.
