FAO: Promoting biodiversity across all agricultural sectors ‘fundamental’
30.05.2018 18:13 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of this year May 2931, at FAO headquarters in Rome, a Multi-stakeholder Dialogue on Biodiversity Mainstreaming across Agricultural Sectors is taking place, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, the Dialogue is organized by the FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization)
The Dialogue will be an open-ended informal meeting bringing together experts and stakeholders from agriculture, forestry, fisheries and the environment sectors aiming at identifying areas of joint action in developing integrated approaches for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, in support of the SDGs, while increasing production to meet the growing demand for food. The Dialogue will be followed by a High-Level Segment on 31 May 2018.
In meanwhile, while addressing the Dialogue, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said that the countries across the world must change their ways to produce food and this is fundamental to protect the future of the Earth ecosystem.
He called for transformative changes within the global food production, to be aimed at producing healthy and nutritious food while simultaneously safeguarding the planet biodiversity.
As to him, with large areas of the planet surface used to grow food, raise animals or produce products such as timber, the agricultural sector if managed sustainably can make significant contributions to the biodiversity protection.
«Biodiversity is essential for safeguarding global food security and nutrition, improving rural livelihoods, and enhancing the resilience of people and communities,» da Silva stressed.
