Omelyan met with IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim

As of this week, Ukrainian Minister of Infrastructure Volodymyr Omelyan, while on a working visit to London, held a bilateral meeting with Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Kitack Lim, Government Portal reports.
As to the report, within the meeting the parties considered the preparation of Ukraine for the IMO audit, scheduled for Jun 2018.
Reportedly, Omelyan expressed his gratitude to the IMO Secretary-General for technical assistance within the process of gearing up for the IMO audit, which has been provided to our country since 2015.
As to the report, the two parties also tackled the ways to intensify Ukrainian participation within the activity of this international organization and strategic priorities of development of Ukraine as a naval state.
It is to be reminded, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. Ukraine joined the IMO in 1994.
It is to be admitted, the mandatory audit of all Member States commenced as of Jan 1, 2016, with the aim of determining the extent to which they give full and complete effect to their obligations and responsibilities contained within a number of IMO treaty instruments.
The mandatory IMO instruments included within the scope of the Scheme are: safety of life at sea; prevention of pollution from ships; standards of training, certification and watch keeping for seafarers; load lines; tonnage measurement of ships; and regulations for preventing collisions at sea.
