Yemen cholera cases surpass 300,000
12.07.2017 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The number of suspected cases of cholera within Yemen has surpassed 300,000 within just 75 days, UN Radio says referring to the WHO (UN World Health Organization) report.
As to the report, the unprecedented outbreak of the disease is also associated with 1,700 deaths within the country.
As to the report, cholera is now spread over 90% of all districts within Yemen and within all but one of the country 22 governorates.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners are scaling up efforts to minimize the spread of acute watery diarrhoea and cholera within the Eastern Mediterranean region (which covers 21 countries, incl. Yemen).
As to the WHO, population movements are boosting the risk of the disease spreading within the still unaffected areas.
Thus, for example, a cholera outbreak within Somalia has spread to the north which had been cholera-free for more than a decade.
The WHO warns though the acute watery diarrhoea and cholera are easily treatable, they can be life-threatening without immediate medical care.
