Agrarian Minister urges Ukrainian MPs to promote agricultural development

As of today, while speaking in Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament), Ukrainian Agrarian Policy and Food Minister Taras Kutovyi has urged the people’s deputies to show more commitment to supporting the development of the Ukrainian agricultural sector, in particular, agricultural machinery and seed breeding, UNIAN reports.
«I am aware that the agricultural sector may not be a high-tech industry, and in terms of value added, it may not generate as much income as the space or defense industry. Having the potential of perhaps one of the most powerful industries, it is necessary to channel all the funds available in this industry into stabilization of positions within it, to enable the development of mechanical engineering in agriculture, as obsolescence and physical wear in the industry is at a catastrophic level, and 70% of machines operated on the Ukrainian fields are obsolete and deteriorated,» Kutovyi said.
The Minister, while speaking about the seed breeding industry, admitted it is a high-tech sector — but it is presently much underdeveloped in Ukraine.
«We must ensure the availability of the knowledge-intensive industries in the Ukrainian agricultural sector, for example, the seed breeding. The news is disappointing: only 3% of sugar beet grown in Ukraine is based on Ukrainian seeds,» the Minister stressed.
As to the earlier report, the Agrarian Minister expects that Ukrainian MPs will pass three draft laws in short time: on privatization of Ukrspirt State company (the monopoly in the Ukrainian domestic alcohol product market), on the mechanism of State support to small- and medium-sized agricultural companies, and on the turnover of the agricultural lands.
