UNHCR: Cautious backing for EU refugee deal
24.09.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The European Unions decision to take in 120,000 asylum-seekers received a cautious welcome on Thurs from the UN refugee agency UNHCR, UN Radio says referring to the UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres report.
As to the report, under the EU agreement, more than US$1 milliard will also be given to help millions of Syrian refugees living in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.
Also, Guterres warned that the plan can only work if robust resettlement centres are built «to receive, assist, register and screen» the new arrivals.
And he said that those who are not in need of protection in Europe must be returned to their country of origin humanely.
Upon whole, UNHCR estimates that one from 10 Syrian refugees are in need of resettlement what means in total 400,000 people.
