On the seventieth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, the call by survivors for a world free of nuclear weapons has received the support of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, survivors gathered in Japan today at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima to honour the tens of thousands of people killed by the worlds first atomic bombing on 6 August 1945.
Maria Carlino reports.
Reportedly, the UN Chief admitted the commemoration should remind all people of the need for urgent action to eliminate nuclear weapons once and for all.
In a message to the ceremony, he described the survivors as «unparalleled champions of peace» and said the United Nations stands with them.
Mr. Ban echoed their rallying cry «No more Hiroshimas. No more Nagasakis.»
It is to be admitted, the first resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1945 reflected the worlds concern about the use of atomic weapons.
