UN: "Sustainable financing" needed for regional and sub-regional organizations worldwide
05.05.2015 09:59 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Regional and sub-regional organizations working with the United Nations need financial support from the rest of the world, UN Radio says referring to the UN General Assembly President Sam Kutesa report made at the beginning of a high-level thematic debate in New York yesterday focusing on strengthening cooperation between the UN and regional groupings.
As to the report, now there are over 25 regional and sub-regional organizations world-wide that have established formal relationships with the United Nations.
They include large groups such as the Association of the South East Asian Nations known as ASEAN, the European Union and the Caribbean Community or CARICOM.
Reportedly, many of the smaller groups do not have enough money to work effectively.
«These organizations continue to make a significant contribution, but several of them remain constrained by lack of financial, technical and logistical resources. It is incumbent upon us to find ways of ensuring predictable and sustainable financing for regional and sub-regional organizations, especially in cases where they undertake peacekeeping operations under a UN mandate,» Mr. Kutesa said.
