Health chiefs call for new strategy on malaria
23.04.2015 14:07 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
A new global strategy against malaria is vital if progress is to be made against the killer disease, UN Radio reports referring to the UN World Health Organization (WHO) health experts’ statement issued on Thurs.
It is to be admitted, the statement was made ahead of the World Malaria Day on April 25.
As to the report, experts say despite advances in recent years, «significant gaps» remain in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the mosquito-borne disease, which kills more than half a million lives every year.
Reportedly, announcing the new strategy to eliminate malaria, UN health experts say they want to reduce deaths from malaria by 40 per cent by 2020, and by at least 90 per cent by 2030.
As to the report, the World Health Organization plan has yet to be approved by the General Assembly which meets next month.
Reportedly, experts admit their aim is to work harder with countries where the disease is endemic and where WHO is worried about growing resistance to anti-malarial drugs and insecticides used in mosquito nets.
Meanwhile, WHO partner Roll Back Malaria say that «three to four times» the $2.7 billion currently spent on malaria every year is needed in future.
