International community urged to emphasis forest for development policies
24.06.2014 09:21 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Countries around the world need to put more emphasis on maintaining and enhancing the contributions of forests to livelihoods, food, health and energy, UN Radio says referring to the State of the Worlds Forests report released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The report argues that the role of forests in food security and development is often overlooked.
Ewald Rametsteiner, a Senior Forestry Officer with FAO, says the importance of forests should not be under-estimated.
«There are around 1.3 billion people who more or less have a roof over their heads because of forest products. Thats around 20 per cent of the worlds population. That is certainly on the conservative side of the estimate. The same is true for the number of people who cook with wood energy. We are talking about 2.4 plus billion people that are affected. Its quite impressive how important wood energy is nowadays,» Mr. Rametsteiner emphasizes.
The State of the Worlds Forests report is published every two years, and provides policy-makers, foresters, civil society and forest-reliant communities with a comprehensive and global look at the status of forests.
