"Historic" UN Environmental Assembly opens in Nairobi
24.06.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Finding ways to use and dispose resources in a way that reduces harm to the environment will be a key focus of the United Nations first ever Environmental Assembly or UNEA, UN Radio says referring to
Naysan Sahba, the UN Environment Programmes Director for Communications and Public Information report.
The UNEA opened yesterday in Nairobi on Monday with more than 1,200 participants including government delegates, stakeholders, scientists, business leaders and civil society representatives.
Mr Sahba said the meeting was a «historic» one.
«Hopefully this week is a week in which key decisions will be made but also an opportunity for debate, for dialogue, for the presentation of cutting edge science, cutting edge research -all of which is crucial in terms of informing policy- innovations, the voice of stakeholders, civil society, the private sector, you get the holistic sense of just what it means to advance the environmental agenda in a meaningful way,» Mr. Sahba emphasized.
UNEA is a result of the call made by world leaders at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development otherwise known as Rio+20, held in Brazil in 2012, to strengthen and upgrade UNEP as the leading global environmental authority.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to attend the closing of the meeting on Friday.
