UN Secretary-General attends maternal health global summit in Canada

A global summit in support of the UN Secretary-Generals flagship movement to improve the health of women and children worldwide has opened on Thursday, UN Radio reports.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon has travelled to Toronto, in Canada for the Every Women Every Child initiative.
The Summit will provide global leaders and experts with a platform to build consensus on the focus of future international efforts in maternal, newborn and child health.

«Specifically, it will focus on the critical issues of strengthening health systems and building civil registration and vital statistics systems; reducing the burden of diseases on developing countries; scaling up nutrition as a foundation for healthy lives; and building new partnerships with the private sector.» Mr. Ban emphasized.
The Secretary-General will also meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada and other officials gathered for the Summit.
