Sailors partner with UNESCO on ocean research

A partnership between a Spanish sailing organization and the United Nations cultural agency, UNESCO, aimed at contributing to scientific ocean research, is being launched at the UN on Friday,UN Radio says.
The agreement between the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) and the Barcelona Foundation for Ocean Sailing has been described as «an unprecedented alliance between the sailing and scientific communities.»
The two organizations will raise awareness of the current environmental challenges and threats to the health of the world’s oceans.
Crews participating in the 2014, Barcelona World Race (BWR), a round-the-world regatta organized by the Foundation, will collect data on surface temperatures and salinity and compile meteorological records.
The information will be analyzed by international ocean research networks such as the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS).
