Agricultural Policy Ministry Forecasts That Sunflower Harvest Will Remain At 3.3 Million Tons In 2003
16.04.2003 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) - The Agricultural Policy Ministry is forecasting that the gross sunflower harvest in 2003 will total 3.3 million tons, the same as the 2002 harvest. Agricultural Policy Minister Serhii Ryzhuk announced this at a press conference. “Regarding sunflower, the 2002 situation will be preserved,” Ryzhuk said. He added that the Agricultural Policy Ministry does not intend to stimulate or restrict sunflower production by agricultural producers. “We will not apply a stimulus or restriction,” Ryzhuk said. According to agricultural market participants, farmers plan to re-sow the significant areas of land where winter grain crops perished this year. They plan to re-sow at least 2.7-2.8 million hectares with sunflower, among other things. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, State Statistics Committee data states that the sunflower harvest increased by 1,019,700 tons or 45.3% to reach 3,270,300 tons (weight after processing) in 2002, compared with the corresponding period of 2001. Farmers harvested sunflower from 2,718,600 hectares of land in 2002, compared with 2,396,100 hectares in 2001. Sunflower is considered one of the most liquid crops in the country. Therefore, farmers actively grow it. (Ukrainian News)
