Agricultural Policy Ministry Forecasts 12% Increase In Sugar Production From Sugar Beet
16.04.2003 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) - The Ministry of Agricultural Policy forecasts that sugar production from sugar beet will increase by 11.9% or 170,000 tons compared with 2001, to 1,600,000 tons in 2003, Agricultural Policy Minister Serhii Ryzhuk has announced at a press conference. “1.6-1.8 million tons, this meets the demand of the domestic market,” Ryzhuk said. He added that production of sugar beet is expected to rise up to 16.63 million tons against 14.38 million tons in 2002. Ryzhuk also said that farmers plan to operate on the same area under sugar beet as in last year, that is 900,000 hectares. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Agricultural Policy Ministry forecasts that in 2003 farmers will sow sugar beet on not less than 932,000 hectares, which coincides with 2002 indicators. In 2002, sugar beet harvest fell by 7.7% or 1.198 million tons compared with 2001, to 14.376 million tons.
