Eaton’s X20 portfolio of open-circuit piston pumps provides new industry benchmark for accuracy and flexibility

Power management company Eaton today announced a series of new controls and updates for the company’s X20 portfolio of open circuit piston pumps. This includes electronic displacement control across all X20 displacements, an updated pressure/flow control, and a new hydro mechanical torque control for the 620 Series pumps.

These, together electrohydraulic pressure controls, enable the X20 portfolio to offer customers a comprehensive range of controls, which will enable the pump to integrate more easily into sophisticated machine control systems, maximizing efficiency with less wasted energy. This helps mobile machine builders meet customers` requirements for better control and more efficient operations.
“These new options for the X20 range will greatly enhance the ability to be integrated into many hydraulic systems, from simple load sense to sophisticated electrohydraulic and digital systems that offer dynamic machine control--helping machine designers improve equipment accuracy and performance,” said John Taylor, EMEA product manager, Hydraulics, Eaton.

The Electronic Displacement Control (EDC) varies the swash angle proportionally per the electric current, providing greater flexibility in machine design, greater efficiency in operation and improved productivity with direct control over pump output flow. This allows multiple functions with different system requirements to individually operate while delivering precise use of the total power available. The X20 portfolio EDC is available on all displacements from 28 cubic centimeters(cc) to 98cc and with two different configurations, default to full displacement (“EP”) or default to zero displacement upon loss of electronic signal, (“EPD”). This permits the EDC to be used in applications such as cooling fan drives or concrete machinery, where hydraulic flow must be maintained even in the event of an electrical failure, ensuring safe and stabile operations on the field.

The X20 Electronic Proportional Pressure Control limits outlet pressure proportionally to signal current and can be used as an alternative to hydro-mechanical control or indeed alongside the EDC to provide independent control of both pressure and flow. As with EDC, two versions are available, proportional and inverse proportional, the latter often known as “Fan Drive”.

The new hydro mechanical torque control feature, available on the 74cc and 98cc displacements, limits the torque required by the pump based on the setting. By limiting the peak input torque demand across the range or pressures, speeds, and temperatures, the pump prevents engine stalling while maximising the use of the engine power. In this way it is possible to downsize the engine, thus reducing fuel consumption in applications such as telehandlers, excavators and forestry equipment.

The control has low hysteresis and a true hyperbolic characteristic for optimal performance. As well as improved accuracy over two spring designs, this new control also benefits from having one single adjusting screw to set the torque, which is adjustable with the hydraulic system running.
Available for 220 and 420 frame sizes, all x20 load sense and pressure compensated pumps are now available with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Marine certification, permitting their use on marine power systems for steering and propulsion.
