14.02.2012 12:07 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Last fall, domestic farmers sowed winter crops on nearly 8.5 million hectares. However, due to bad weather almost 1.5 million of winter crops’ seeded areas haven’t sprouted. Currently, farmers are already preparing for spring field work and re-sowing of from 2.5 to 3 million hectares of winter crops. The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Mykola Prysyazhnyuk and experts from the Ministry visited all regions of the country and held meetings devoted to spring-field works to resolve this situation.
As of today, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food representatives have held meetings in all regions. Only since the beginning of this year, Mykola Prysyazhnyuk personally visited Poltava, Rivne, Volyn, Zaporizhzhya and Kyiv regions.
«Meetings are held in each of 25 regions, taking into account climatic zones of the respective region. Academicians, who recommend what varities should be sown at the areas where winter crops have not sprouted, are involved into the discussions» the Minister said.
According to Mykola Prysyazhnyuk, the winter crops’ situation is not very critical, since in some years Ukrainian agrarians had to perform re-sowing at about 6 million hectares of winter crops’ areas. However, in some regions Lugansk, Zaporizhia, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv regions and the Crimea, where snow cover is absent or too small, agrarians will have to re-sow significant areas.
Currently, the Government has allocated 20 million UAH from budget for purchase of additional seeds for spring field works. The Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov instructed to find ways to cheapen cost of fertilizer, fuel and lubricants, what is to compensate to farmers the expenditures necessary to re-sow winter corps and perform other spring field works.
The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food said that despite the winter crops’ adverse situation, Ukraine doesn’t face any threat of food crisis and there is no dynamics of grain prices’ rise on domestic market, either.
In general, the state of preparation for the complex spring field works is to be considered on February 23 this year at the extended session of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
