Russia Grain Crop Climbs to 95 Million Tons, Ministry Says

Russian farmers harvested 95 million metric tons of grain as of today, the Agriculture Ministry said.
They reaped the grain from 41.1 million hectares (101.6 million acres), or 96 percent of the sown area, the ministry said in an e-mailed statement.
The wheat harvest reached 58.9 million tons from 24.7 million hectares, or 98 percent of the sown area, according to the statement. That compared with 42.9 million tons at the same date last year, when the country’s worst drought in a half century parched fields. The weight is given before drying and cleaning, according to the statement.
The barley crop reached 17.6 million tons from 99 percent of the planted area. Buckwheat was at 738,000 tons from 90 percent of the sown area.
Rice reached 836,000 tons from 85 percent of sown fields. The corn harvest was 3.5 million tons from 803,000 hectares, or 49 percent of the sown area.
Sunflower seeds were harvested from 54 percent of the sown area and reached 5.6 million tons. The sugar-beet crop was at 26.1 million tons from 54 percent of the planted area.
Winter grain sowing covered 14.9 million hectares, or 91 percent of the target area, the ministry said.
