Information on climate helps poor farmers
19.10.2011 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Providing scientific information about climate and weather patterns particularly in developing countries helps farmers to engage in agriculture and fight desertification.
That’s according to the head of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Michel Jarraud who is attending a conference on combating desertification in Changwon, South Korea.
WMO is working on a new Global Framework on Climate Services to provide relevant and timely information to all countries and communities around the world.
Mr. Jarraud says that many countries in Africa, for example, depend on rainfall for agriculture.
«Some variability, some difference in the rainfall pattern can have a huge impact on the crops, and that in turn can have an impact on desertification because of the usage by the people. They sometimes have to grow in places which are not really suitable for growing. We contribute by providing farmers with information but also with training, how to better use meteorological, climatic, hydrological information,» emphasizes Mr. Jarraud.
