High food prices threaten to drive millions into hunger
18.10.2011 08:04 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
High food prices are once again threatening to push millions of people into hunger around the world, say experts of three Rome-based United Nations Agencies observing World Food Day 2011.
A global hunger report recently published by the agencies warns that the food price hikes are likely to continue and possibly increase in the future.
Jacques Diouf, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization says unfavourable weather conditions are to blame, having hit major crop producing countries causing food prices to go up again.
«By the end of the year, grain prices soared to what they were at the peak of the 2008 food crisis. Those high prices in 2008 pushed an additional 80 million people into hunger, increasing the number of hungry and malnourished to almost one billion. That is around one seventh of the world’s population,» emphasizes Diouf.
World Food Day is observed on 16 October each year to raise awareness about food issues.
