Anti-poverty project to receive $27 million from George Soros

The financier and philanthropist, George Soros has pledged to contribute
$27 million to a United Nations-supported project that is working to meet the Millennium Development Goals to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015.
The Millennium Villages Project, carried out in ten Sub-Saharan countries, combines investments in agriculture, education and health in clusters of villages of up to 50,000 people.
Mr. Soros admitted that as the project enters its next phase, he has decided to renew his support.
«I plan to contribute $27 million over the next five years. This follows the $50 million that I gave in 2006. In addition, the Soros Economic Development Fund Social Investment Fund that is part of my Open Society Foundation will consider up to $20 million in investment worthy business projects in participating countries,» Mr. Soros said.
