Governments urged to speed up efforts to combat climate change
04.10.2011 10:27 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Governments are being urged by the United Nations climate change chief to speed up their efforts to combat climate change.
According to Christiana Figueres, governments recognize that they need to do more to reduce greenhouse gases and increase their capacity to adapt to climate change.
UN spokesman Martin Nesirky has more.
«Christiana Figueres was speaking in Panama at the last formal negotiation session of the year ahead of the next annual UN Climate Change Conference in the South African city of Durban, which starting in November. She said governments know that the best way to have a successful meeting in Durban is to arrive there with draft decisions texts. She also said that she sees a lot of support for that approach,» admits Nesirky.
One of the major issues expected to be discussed at the Durban conference is deciding what to do after 2012, when the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol ends.
