Millions of city dwellers threatened by rising sea levels
04.10.2011 08:24 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Rising sea levels caused by climate change are threatening the lives of millions of people living in major coastal cities.
That’s the message delivered by United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro on World Habitat Day observed on the first Monday of October.
The theme for this year’s observance is «Cities and Climate Change».
Deputy Secretary-General Migiro said that rising sea levels are a major impact of climate change and an urgent concern for many people.
«Sixty million people now live within one meter of sea level. By the end of the century, that number will jump to 130 million. Major coastal cities such as Cairo, New York, Karachi, Calcutta, Belem, New Orleans, Shanghai, Tokyo, Lagos, Miami and Amsterdam could face serious threats from storm surges. The nexus between urbanization and climate change is real and potentially deadly,» Migiro said.
