26.09.2011 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Four million Somalis need urgent help to cope with famine and drought ravaging the Horn of Africa.
That’s what United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told world leaders attending the session of the General Assembly as they met on Saturday to discuss the crisis in the Horn of Africa.
The Secretary-General said that $700 million is needed to respond to the crisis affecting 13 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Djibouti.
«In Somalia, famine has spread through large areas of the south. Three quarters of a million men, women and children are at imminent risk of starvation; four million need urgent help. Tens of thousands of refugees have moved to Mogadishu, overwhelming its limited infrastructure. Tens of thousands have crossed the borders to overcrowded camps in neighbouring countries,» stated Ban Ki-moon.
