EU facing sharply lower rapeseed crop
01.07.2011 15:09 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The European Union is
heading for a major fall in its
2011 rapeseed crop, creating a
large supply deficit for its most
important oilseed in the coming
year.
«In Germany, France and Poland
the rapeseed crop has
suffered badly from the drought this spring,» one analyst
said. «It is increasingly clear that rain was not enough to
save the harvest.»
German oilseeds analysts Oil World forecasts the 2011 EU
rapeseed crop will fall to a four-year low of 18.91 million
tonnes from 20.5 million tonnes in 2010.
Crops suffered from a drought in the spring and rain in
June was too late to enable plants to fully recover.
This would put output well below forecast EU rapeseed
crushings of 21.3 million tonnes in the new 2011/2012 season.
In Germany, usually the EUs largest rapeseed producer,
the crop is likely to fall a dramatic 24.5 percent on the year
to 4.3 million tonnes, farm cooperatives forecast.
«There is no doubt that Germany is heading for a major
crop reduction with rapeseed perhaps the big victim of this
years drought,» one analyst said.
«I can see no hope for a significant late improvement, in
coming weeks people are just going to have to realise they
will need more imports.»
