Rising prices in Sudan as referendum looms
21.12.2010 09:52 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
With an independence referendum in the South expected to lead to its breakaway, Sudan’s economy is feeling the pinch as its currency plummets while bread and sugar prices rise. According to latest data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the world price of wheat has risen by 12 percent from its average in November.
Sudan, Africa’s largest country, with a population of more than 40 million, imports about two-thirds of its wheat. That requires foreign currency. But the Sudanese pound has sharply depreciated in recent months, partly owing to trepidation ahead of the referendum.
