US farmers finding damage from freezing weather
08.12.2010 10:24 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Farmers reported temperatures as low as 26 degrees today in western Palm Beach County, as they began to count their losses in vegetable fields burned by frost.
Buddy McKinstry, owner of JEM Farms, had assessed four 18-acre blocks of corn by 9 a.m., and the damage was already apparent.
«I have lost four blocks of corn. It was 26 degrees on one farm and 28 degrees on the other. It looks like it is burnt up pretty good,» McKinstry said. «I am looking at some beans here on Tabit Road in Belle Glade. They are completely black.»
Fields closest to Lake Okeechobee, which provides a warming effect, looked like they came through unscathed.
