Farmers Plan Repeat Sowing Of 55% Of Winter Crops
14.04.2003 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) - Agricultural enterprises will have to repeatedly sow 50-50% (4-4.5 million hectares) of winter crops after they perished between October 2002 and March 2003 due to unfavorable weather conditions. The press service of the Cabinet of Ministers reported this to Ukrainian News referring to data from regions and specialists’ estimates. The statement of the press service says that the volume of fieldwork in spring will increase at least by 4 million hectares. The government is very alarmed by the current situation at the agricultural enterprises and by unfavorable weather conditions delaying fieldwork. According to the press service, the Cabinet of Ministers has developed special measures for spring sowing campaign to assist farmers and minimize risks of failing to meet planned volumes. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, agricultural enterprises plan to increase the volume of spring crops by 30-31% compared with 2002, to 21 million hectares in 2003 due to re-sowing of approximately 4-4.5 million hectares under perished winter crops. Typically, farmers re-sow up to 10% of winter crops killed by bad weather. Farmers have sowed winter crops on 8.4 million hectares, including 8.016 million hectares under grain crops in 2003. Wheat is the main winter crop. Overall in 2002, farmers sowed 27.4 million hectares, including 15.8 million hectares under spring crops, a decline of 1.8% or 513,500 hectares compared with 2001. That year farmers produced 38.792 million tons of grain, a decline of 2.3% or 0.914 million tons compared with 2001. (Ukrainian News)
