ILO calls for adoption of minimum wage policies
10.12.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The global economic crisis has had a strong impact on workers wages around the world with many seeing little or no changes at all in their earnings, UN Radio says referring to the International Labour Organization (ILO).
In its annual Global Wages Report, ILO says global monthly wages grew by 1.2 per cent in 2011, down from a high of three per cent in 2007.
ILO is calling on its member states to adopt minimum wage policies as a way of reducing working poverty and providing social protection for vulnerable employees.
ILO Director-General Guy Ryder says minimum wages help protect low-paid workers and prevent a fall in their purchasing power, which in turn hurts domestic demand and slows economic recovery.
«The ILO does not give a figure, be it, 40,50,60 per cent, but we do believe that minimum wages of cause should such as to provide for a descent income. An income which allows one to live in a reasonable dignity, and should not be such as cost to be so high as to inhibit employment creation and access to labour markets. Generally in the emerging and developing world, wages have been more resilient, we have seen strong growth in Asia and more modest but nevertheless still positive wage growth in Latin America and the Caribbean. African is quite difficult to give you reliable information because statistics are not as reliable, but we do believe there is modest positive growth in Africa as well,» admits Mr. Guy Ryder.
Workers in industrialized countries are not expected to see any wage increases in 2012.
