04.10.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Progress has been made in assessing the risk of living modified organisms, also known as LMOs, according to an information officer for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, UN Radio reports.
David Ainsworth spoke to UN Radio as more than 1,000 delegates gathered in Hyderabad, India to review the Protocol on Biosafety adopted in Montreal, Canada in 2000.
The protocol is named after the Colombian city of Cartagena where the final round of negotiations was launched.
«We are having the meeting of the parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which a special protocol that deals with the labelling, handling and transport of living modified organisms. And I can just say that in that protocol we have had great progress made in terms of countries coming up with scientifically-based risk assessment procedures that help underpin the safe handling of any of these LMOs as they move within and outside of borders of countries,» Mr. Ainsworth said.
