Egypt prefers to buy Russian wheat than US wheat
28.03.2003 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) - According to the agency "OsterDowJohns, the state purchasing company of Egypt (GASC) and Russia have reached understanding in the question of structure of barter deliveries of 1 mn.MT of Russian wheat for Egyptian agricultural commodities. The company GASC did not buy Russian wheat since the time of disintegration of USSR. However, according to the opinion of the analysts, Egypt is hardly ready to import up to 1 mn.MT of Russian wheat annually. Especially it is unlikely in a case if it will be offered the competitive shipments of wheat of its traditional suppliers EU and USA, which has better quality. Meanwhile private milling companies, which annual volume of consumption of import wheat amounts up to 2 mn. MT, prefer to purchase cheaper Russian and Ukrainian grain recently. Egypt imported more than 1 mn.MT of Russian wheat since July 2002 till February 2003. At that the price of Russian wheat was at 128 USD/MT CIF in February whereas the prices for American wheat were at 145/ò FOB for SRW and at 149.75 USD/MT FOB for SWW. At the same time the state food company "Food Industries Holding Company" (FIHC) purchased 35 ths MT of Russian wheat under the price 143 USD/MT from the local private importers in February 2003.
