FAO: there is no food security without water security
28.08.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
There is need to better manage water and avoid its waste throughout the entire process of food production, thats the message that has been delivered by the head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to the World Water Week which began in Stockholm, Sweden on Monday, says UN Website report. As to report, FAO says that recurring drought in some parts of the world has hurt grain production and led to the increase in food prices since 2007. The head of the United Nations agriculture agency, José Graziano da Silva, told participants at World Water Week in Stockholm that there is no food security without water security. He warned that water scarcity and pollution are posing a growing risk to key production systems around the world. Mr. da Silva said that agriculture, as practiced today, is one of the causes of this phenomenon because it uses 70 per cent of freshwater. World Water Week is an annual event that brings together political leaders and experts from around the world to discuss issues related to water.
