UN "blueprint" promotes development of the green economy in Asia-Pacific
29.05.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Asia-Pacific countries are being urged to lead the global push towards a green economy that will help reduce poverty while promoting sustainable development.
The charge comes from Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, head of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), which on Monday launched what it called a «blueprint» for developing countries in the region.
According to Dr. Heyzer, the region must shift its current path if it is to sustain the high economic growth necessary to achieve development goals.
The ESCAP Low Carbon Green Growth Roadmap for Asia and the Pacific calls for a transformation of the economic system.
It lists strategies for policy makers to convert the challenges of shrinking natural resources and climate change into opportunities for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
For example, ESCAP says instead of traditional taxes, countries in the region can levy resource consumption and pollution.
It says a tax of $10 per tonne of carbon emission, combined with corporate taxes, could cut global CO2 emissions by eight per cent by the year 2020 while increasing economic growth by nearly three per cent.
