Medvedev wants board of independent directors in Russia
22.03.2012 19:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
President Dmitry Medvedev has urged state officials to fully withdraw from boards of directors of companies and banks of Russia.
Speaking at a session of the working group for the formation of a «transparent government» in Moscow on Thursday, Medvedev stressed the necessity of forming a board of independent directors as soon as possible.
He also supported a bill obliging state officials and their family members to declare their incomes something that Medvedev said will help curb corruption the proceeds of which account for at least 2 percent of the country’s GDP.
The main focus should be placed on curbing state interference in the economy, fighting corruption in the top echelons of power and minimizing the level of grassroots graft, Medvedev said. He also underscored the need to grapple with corruption in the state purchasing system.
Fighting corruption is a long process, Medvedev said, adding that toughening the country’s Criminal Code would not be enough.
But the biggest problem would be changing people’s mentality in this respect, he admitted.
