UN Advisor: Extreme poverty drops because of concerted global efforts
09.03.2012 09:47 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Poverty has sharply declined worldwide and efforts to facilitate social development have paid off, according to Jeffrey Sachs, UN Special Advisor on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Mr. Sachs and other senior UN officials on Thursday took stock of global progress made on the MDGs.
Tremendous progress has also been made against diseases like AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, he said.
«There has been clear, rapid and unprecedented progress in many regions - all regions are now experiencing a drop of poverty. The Millennium Development Goals was a turning point in the world because you see poverty rising until 2000 and then falling now. And it’s falling faster and faster. Let’s keep it up because we can really get the job done. With Secretary-General’s leadership I have no doubt that we will get the job done,» emphasized Mr. Sachs.
Mr. Sachs recalled that the world has met the MDG target of halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water.
